This week in the first grade classroom:
READING: Our story this week is
"Simple Machines" by Allan Fowler. Phonics skills this week include: diphthong oi, oy and inflectional
endings: -er, -or. Comprehension skill this week is "main idea." New high-frequency words are:

SPELLING: Spelling words for this week are words with oi and oy. The following
words will be on the test on Friday: [ oil soil voice point

LANGUAGE ARTS: Identify pronouns. Use pronouns
in writing in place of nouns that name people, places, and things.
MATH: Counting money.
Recognize and count groups of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Know coin combinations that are equivalent in value
to one quarter. Recognize the dollar bill, half dollar, and dollar coin.
HEALTH:
Chapter 9 We identify caffeine as a common drug found in many foods we eat and drink. We learn ways caffeine
affects the body.
SOCIAL STUDIES: Unit 5 (This Is Our Country) We learn the origin of holidays
such as Columbus Day and Thanksgiving. We discuss reasons for celebrating holidays.
SCIENCE: We learn
about our natural resources: air, land, and water. We talk about ways we use these resources and ways we must
take care of them (conservation). We discuss ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle our natural resources. Review
for a science test - see pp. 172-173. Test - Possibly on Thurs.
